The basement 60s soul party that
is MoveOnUp first started attracting the discerning clubbers of Leeds to their
weekly residency at the long gone but much missed basement jazz club The
Underground in February 1996. 13 years later, in 2009, it’s still going
strong! Founded by DJs/promoters Ed Mason and John Morelli the night firmly
established itself amongst music fans looking for an alternative to the house
sounds that were so dominate in Leeds at the time. Playing Northern Soul,
Motown, Stax and sundry other 60s soul and beat sounds the night drew capacity
crowds week in, week out, and something of a rarity for mid-week nights it ran
52 weeks a year-round, not taking the often compulsory summer holidays when the
students leave town.

Amidst much furore, The
Underground was closed in Summer 2000, and so following 4 and a ½ years at The
Underground, the promoters decided that Leeds’ needed a replacement for The
Underground and so decided to open their own venue. The HiFi Club. By now
joined by resident DJ and soul aficionado Matt Bolton, the night has been a
staple of The HiFi Club and the Leeds nightlife scene ever since.
